Club Deportivo Guadalajara, commonly known as Chivas, has linked with the Mexican national lottery to launch a suite of commemorative tickets.

The partnership will celebrate the 115th anniversary of the Liga MX team, which was one of the founding members of the original Mexican First Division, with the tickets paying tribute to the club through four special designs.

Margarita González Saravia Calderón, Head of the national lottery, said that Chivas “is in the hearts of all Mexicans,” thanks to the sports achievements and identity that it has built throughout its history.

“The Lotería Nacional celebrates this month 251 years of its first draw. It’s the second oldest institution after the local post office,” she remarked. “It has left us an important legacy, as what we collect is redirected to health projects, social benefits, and [also] people can have fun and win.

“In this case, the image of Chivas, from Club Deportivo Guadalajara, is already [spread across] the Republic. We are delighted to be part of this tribute.”

Taking place on 13 June at 8am, the Sorteo Zodiaco No. 1530 lottery will feature the image and shield of the club, one of only two clubs to have never been relegated to the second tier of Mexican football. The lottery will feature a jackpot of over $7 million, with a further $24 million to be distributed in prizes.

Amaury Vergara, President of Chivas, commented: “It’s something that seems very symbolic of the Mexican culture. In this context of our 115th anniversary, we are very excited to have such an unprecedented participation with the national lottery.”

“We want to share everything we’ve prepared for the rojiblanca fans and for everyone who feels lucky, who wants to buy a piece of tradition, essence and history of this Guadalajara team,” he added, and said that this commemorative draw is “very symbolic for Mexicans.”

Ramón Ramírez, a former Chivas player, added: “I feel very happy and honoured. From the first day that I stepped onto the field, I fell in love with the club and I will always be. Today, we celebrate the 115th anniversary with the national lottery. It reflects who the most popular team in the country is.”

The partnership is the second agreement between a lottery operator and a football organization to be announced this week, as Poland’s top-flight Ekstraklasa renewed its sponsorship with state-owned lottery operator Totalizator Sportowy’s Lotto.
