France’s biggest payment technologies group, Worldline, has announced it is spearheading a new campaign to strengthen ‘technology environments’ and commercial connectivity for all sports.

The COPA EUROPE project has been initiated to prepare Worldline’s sports clients and wider businesses servicing sports for the next evolution of consumer engagements that will be brought on by Europe’s adoption of 5G connectivity.

Leading COPA EUROPE’s directives, Worldline aims to partner with technology counterparts in developing Europe’s first blockchain-based sports business platform, encompassing all commercial disciplines from media distribution rights, content generation and further technology and key services integrations.

Launching the project, Worldline underlined significant opportunities within esports, whereby the platform will aim to place esports fans ‘at the centre of the decision making process’ by providing an agile and transparent platform to commercialise esports engagements and fan loyalty.

Furthermore, Worldline underscored that esports would be sports most likely beneficent from new innovations brought on by 5G adoption.

Worldline disclosed that it has secured pan-European support for its connectivity project, which will be backed by IBM research, Forthnet Greece, eBOS Cyprus, VITEC Germany and Ektacom France.

Toni Paradell, R&D Manager at Worldline Iberia: “Our project aims to bring the most advanced technologies to the sports and esports sector in particular.

“We are however aware of the very difficult times that the leisure, culture and sports sectors are going through, but precisely such a situation motivates us even more to work hand in hand with all the relevant actors in COPA EUROPE’s ambition to contribute to the activation and recovery of these sectors.”
